[permaculture] uses for old tires?

Hi,Cheryl.
Our little town had a wild fire going trough it recently(and other towns)

At a friends property we used lot of tyres  in a retaining wall/ fill 
and to  hold soil in place..These tyres had as much as 3ft of soil 
covering them.
During the fire what we asume happened is that a lot of the constituent 
parts of the tyres vaporised  and the wapour burned above

I have in the past harbored a desire to use tyres in different 
projects,now i'm reassessing this desire.
We could invest in the above tyre recyling idea.You may also want to
