[permaculture] lowered beds

Here in northern California, with intensely hot, super dry Summers, but a decent growing season, and well-drained loamy soil, I've been trying lowered beds.  The problem is that with all the forking and adding of organic matter, it takes a lot of soil to raise the paths around the beds.  Without first removing the top foot of soil from the beds and then taking the subsoil to put on the paths (with the risk of losing some fertility from my beds), I have to rely on excavations from elsewhere.  A lot of work one way or the other.
