We have well water and we filter all our drinking and cooking water. The
filters we use are ceramic, and I believe they have a silver core.
Here's the filter we use, with a list of what it removes (which is pretty
much everything):

These 'Black Berkey' filter elements fit all the British Berkefeld holders.
The filters appear to be expensive, but they are cleanable, and they last a
long, long time. In our household are two people; a set of two filters
lasts us a year or more.
