Normal design practice for efficiency in harvesting. Robert Harts forest garden follow a natural layering and scattering of plants, not often enough mentioned is his open centre, where the forest garden opens like a ring doughnut to allow more light in cool-temperate areas, nor his vision of half of house gardens being put to forest garden creating at a stroke 1000's Ha of forest.

The Corbett system coppice orchard is designed for market gardening and the own root fruit trees are planted into North-South veg/cereal beds http://uk.youtube.com/user/permaculturefrance

Be careful with the comfrey, use a sterile variety, somebody planted a 'normal' comfrey variety next door and its spreading itself everywhere. Personal policy is to think long and strong before I plant things I can't kill!

[permaculture] row crops in permaculture
I recently took a great permaculture class with Mark Shepard, who
explained that when growing a LOT of trees, to be able to sell nuts or fruit,
permaculturists plant them in rows. However, each tree still gets permaculture
underplantings. Comfrey and daffodils around the apples, for instance.
For families just growing for themselves, he explained, the Edible
Forest Gardens books are the bible. These plantings mimic the patterns of natural
forests. Takes more time.
