Living Off The Land Workshop
This one-day workshop is for those seeking food self-reliance on a rural
homestead (2 to 100 acres). The course is held on a family farm where
we grow a significant part of our diet. By being immersed in a real
operation with all of its inter-relationships, you will gain a thousand
times more understanding than any demonstration models or books could
ever teach. We have implemented and experimented with a variety of food
production techniques drawn from organic farming, permaculture,
agroforestry, indigenous teachings, historical anecdotes, and missionary
work in third world countries. The climate and soils of Central Texas
provide many challenges, and you will save a lot of time and energy by
learning directly from our failures and successes.
A list of topics covered are:
_Water_: rainwater catchment, ponds, wells, grey water systems, earthworks
_Gardens:_ how big?, location, composting, building soil, mulching,
living shade cloth
_Greenhouses & hoop houses:_
_Home butchering:_ *(please do not attend if you cannot handle the
killing and processing of a small animal)*
_Animal husbandry:_ breeds, health, reproduction, housing, feeding,
watering, processing, predators, and rotation.
_Poultry:_ free range, netting, pens, coops, and tractors. Pros & cons
of chickens, turkeys, geese, and guienas
_Orchards and agro-forestry:_
_Calorie crops:_ how much area?, sweet potatoes, sunflowers, peanuts,
grains
_Large livestock:_ holistic range management. Experiences with goats,
cattle, pigs, and sheep
_Wildlife and habitiat restoration:_
_Other possibilities:_ wild-crafting, hunting game, and eating insects
_Food storage:_ root cellars, smoking, canning, solar dehydrating
_Community:_ sharing, learning, and trading with those around you__
The workshop is held at a rural farm within a 70 mile drive from Austin,
TX. The workshop fee is $500 per person and includes the workshop,
notes, snacks, and catered lunch. Class size is limited. Contact
