Regarding squirrels prematurely harvesting apricots:
Try the netting used to repel birds. It confuses the squirrels for a while. I had 2 apricot trees and it helped til the trees got too tall. Eventually I cut down the apricots and planted dogwood trees. The only other answer than putting a barrier {netting} between the squirrels and their chosen food of the moment is to harvest the squirrels. I will be doing that this year as the furry little tree rats are digging up every thing we plant and eat all the hazel nuts before they get a chance to ripen. The hazels are too tall to keep netting. You could also trap and relocate the squirrels assuming that there is not an excess of them in your area already which would keep you busy forever. Harvesting the squirrels is looking better everyday and isn't obtaining a yield one of the permaculture rules?
