Dracunculus vulgaris is blooming today. The plant is bigger this year than
in any recent year. That might be due to the superabundance of rain weve
had this spring.
The foliage tops out at about 4 feet, with the inflorescence held sideways
in the crown of leaves. The spathe is probably thirty inches long and at
least a foot wide. And of course, it reeks.
Sauromatum was in bloom two weeks ago.
Several Brodiaea from Jane McGary are also in bloom: B. jolonensis, B.
elegans and B. californica pink form (which as I have it is more white
than pink). The individual flowers of B. elegans and B. californica are big
and handsome the color of those of B. elegans is very intense.
