Dear Phil,
I can't answer your question directly, but among the species
3 characters seem common:
Fragrant
Yellow Flowers
Night blooming
and among these, I think the very best is H. citrina followed
by H. vespertina.
These open late in the day and stay open all night emitting
their fragrance in the evening garden. Some early hybrids like the
classic 'Hyperion' continue this trend.
I don't really know the extent to which these fragrant
species have been used in modern hybrids.
