Just my two cents about the bees. Just as Diane says, they do need water to
drink. My husband is a beekeeper with 9 hives in our garden. I react to
bee stings rather seriously so we put carpet in front of the hives to keep down
the weeds. We got carpet scraps from a carpet store. They were new and
just happened to be light beige or gray. When bees know they are going to die,
they will crawl away from the hive. If they die in the hive, the worker bees
throw them out. On the days that the neighbors have pest control trucks come
to their homes we find 300 to 500 dead bees on the carpet in front of each
hive. We probably would not have noticed this if the bees were just on the
ground among the weeds. It surprises me that people don't read labels and
assume that whatever they are spraying is only going to kill the one thing they
want and not harm lots of other life forms.
I don't know if this has anything to do with colony colapse disorder but I
sure see a lot of people purchasing chemicals and spraying. Our neighbors
love the honey and are all becoming more aware and more careful as a result of
our garden and beekeeping. We don't see many pest control trucks in our
neighborhood any more.
