Diane's explanation for Arnold's Arums is inspired. The trigger here 
must simply be the passage of time (i.e., boredom). Without pretending 
to understand biochemistry, it is plausible to image a growth inhibitor 
that could be overcome by, say, day-length or precipitation events, but 
will eventually wear off even without external stimuli.
