What I should also have said is that placing a plant in any particular
family has no bearing whatsoever on the plant as it grows in the wild or in
cultivation! A few families may have features that require similar growing
conditions for their member genera and species, but for the most part it is
the species' own requirements that affect its performance as a growing
plant. Families and the higher orders of taxonomy serve the human desire for
order and while it is nice to know the relationships betwen families and
genera, this has very little bearing on what we as gardeners are trying to
do.
