Dear Joe;
India already has an enormous horticultural establishment.
Google "India ornamental horticulture" for 187,000 hits or
"India horticulture" brings over 1 million hits.
One publisher checked at random has 66 books on this topic.
Additionally there are numerous commercial wholesale
nurseries that export to the west. There are a variety of research
institutes and universities devoted to these topics. Granted these
may not be accessible to the poorest and most isolated people.
And India is a land of many diverse climates and growing
environments. As evidence, export bulbs range from Gloriosa to
Arisaema, canna and lilies and many more.
Personally I think you'd be better off offering expertise and
start up cash where warranted. I think any obvious and easy bulbs
already have large scale production where possible in India. If you
can supply unique materials and have an able and knowledgeable
grower, this may have possibilities, but India is far from the 'start
up' situation you suggest.
Maybe more people should place wholesale orders from India to
improve the flow of rarities to the US. I know that some of the bulbs
supplied by Dutch "growers' originate in England and the prices are
multiplied by every middle man along the way.
Hate to burst a bubble here, but this is not really realistic
at this stage.
Best Jim W.
