I couldn't agree more with your statement that "hardiness turns up where 
least expected".  I have a fondness for plants from Crete.  It amazes me 
that they can be so cold hardy.  I can only assume it has something to do 
with the ice ages some 10000yrs ago (or whenever) which must have made 
Crete a much colder island.  Those plants still have that hardiness locked 
up in their genes.
