Hello all
One barrier to bee keeping is a Durham city ordinance prohibiting bee
keeping within the city limits.
(Officially, it is allowed as long as the bees don't leave your
property). Last summer there was
a proposal submitted to remove all barriers to bee keeping within city
limits. To that end the Planning Commission is meeting on Nov 11
and part of that meeting will include public comments. There will be 10
min allotted to comments
in favor of removing the barriers and 10 minutes allotted to comments in
favor of keep the barriers in place.
The result of this meeting is that the Planning Commission will
recommend approval or denial of the proposal. It will then
go to the City Council and to the Board of Commissioners. Of the 3
meetings this one allows for the most influence from the
public. If you are a proponent of bee keeping I would encourage you to
go, even if you are not directly affected by
these ordinances. Another topic at this meeting is to allow chickens
within Durham city limits.
The meeting is Nov 11th at 5:30pm at Durham City Hall. It will be in
the City Council Chambers room on the first floor.
The City hall is a large cement building on N. Mangum st. near the
intersection with Chapel Hill st. There is a parking
garage across Mangum street that is free after 5:00. Inside the Council
chambers there will be signup sheets
for speakers both for and against the proposal. Please forward this to
anyone else who may be interested.
Thanks
Eric Solie
