One usually uses the traditional flat white exterior paint as it 
supposedly keeps the hives cooler. To save costs, go to a paint store 
and buy paint that was mixed in the wrong color. Sometimes they will 
give it away! It's OK if you wind up with a kaliedoscope of colors. Some 
say that this helps the bees find home and reduces drifting.  Also helps 
keep track of rotation.
