Using CuSO4 to control root invasion in septic systems:

I have a friend in IL who operates a private arboretum. The septic leach
field from their home runs out through a heavily forested area - and has for
well over 20 years. Twice yearly, they flush the appropriate amount of
CuSO4 down the toilet, and have had no noticeable problems with root
invasion into their leach lines or septic tank.

we always used salte petre. Drill a hole in the stump and put salte petre
in it and put a cork in the hole. It will kill the tree and rot the roots,
but it may take several years.

Hi,

My parents have a fig tree whose roots spread everywhere and into their
sewage outflow system. So my dad cut the fig down. But, as you can guess,
it's still alive. It's sending up shoots and still interfering with the
sewage system. Is there any kind of herbicide that can be applied which will
safely kill the root system without poisoning the environment? I've never
had to kill anything quite like this before so I haven't been paying
attention to see what the lesser evil in herbicides is.
