I've tasted the solanum "huckleberry" and found it pretty awful. There are so many wonderful members of that family it seems a waste to try that one. We grew them from seeds from a neighbor. Hector Black zone 6 middle tn

What was the problem - too little fruit? Too little size?

I will never grow wonderberry again, complete waste of garden space and time. Might try something larger...Pat

Are these "garden huckleberries" in the Solanum family http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/garden_huckleberry.htm or in the Vaccinium family http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium ?

This is the first year I've grown garden huckleberries - just picked my first batch, perhaps a bit early, as they were still somewhat firm; however, they've been black for at least 3-4 weeks and some seemed to be getting dehydrated.

Anyway, made a pie, and I will agree with others that these make a great pie. Taste like a combination of blueberries and, perhaps, boysenberries?

I grew only 2 plants this year, but this is a plant I might expand upon next year - I'm sure the berries freeze well, and would love to make syrup of these.
