[NAFEX] permanent tree labels

I have never felt the need to label anything, but my lot is not quite an acre, so it is easy to remember what everything is. That being said, I like the idea of carving the appropriate information into a stone that you can place next to the tree. Harbor freight has some really inexpensive diamond carving bits for a rotary tool that I have used to carve names and decorations into quartz crystals for my nephews. It's more work than scribing. But I can't imagine it's much more work than punching individual letters.
Just my two cents. (I lost my nickels apparently.)

For my permanent trees I create a map of the exact location of each tree
and then print it out to have a copy of where everything is located. I
have my files backed up with copies off site in case I would need that
too.

I was going to suggest this method to the group but Lucky beat me to
it.

While you're making that 'permanent' label, make a second one, and
rather than attaching it to the tree, bury it in the mulch/soil at
the base of the tree - that way, when the deer eat or mangle the
original, a windstorm blows it away, or the neighborhood wags steal
'em - or switch them around, you've still got a 'backup' way of
recalling the ID. Choose a consistent spot - like the North or South
side of the tree to bury the backup label.

An orchard map - with multiple copies maintained in separate
locations - is a good idea, too.
