I have Black Lace, though this is only the second year it has bloomed.
It did have a smattering of berries in each flower umbel last year, but
there are two plants each of York and Nova elderberries about 300 feet
away. Still, the area where the Black Lace is located has evergreens
that make a partial barrier between the two elderberry plantings.
Perhaps if they were planted in a group the Black Lace would bear more
fruit. Anecdotal, but it does suggest that you might be able to use
something besides S. nigra to pollinate it.

I have a black elderberry, Sambucus nigra, called Black Lace. It is a
beautiful variety with lacey almost-black leaves and stems and pink
flower clusters. I was hoping for fruit, but this is my 2nd year with
this plant, and only one berry has developed each year. I did some
research and found hybrid elderberries require a second variety for
berry production. Has anyone had luck with Black Lace for fruit? Any
specific varieties required, or will any S. nigra do?
