[NAFEX] Apples on Mini-Dwarf Interstems

I visited Gene's mini orchard about four years ago and wrote a story about him for Old Farmer's Almanac. I was also bitten by the bug. I got my trees custom-grafted on to Bud 9 from a couple of NAFEX listserv members who sell apple trees. Mine have been in the ground for two seasons (were planted in 2004) and all have fruiting spurs. I expect apples this year. I also planted a Pixie Crunch on M111 stock in 2004 and had apples last fall. Of course, this tree is bigger, but it's easily manageable with pruning and training. I chose Bud 9, because I live in Zone 4b-5a on the side of a glacier moraine where cold air drains down. I needed the cold-hardiness. Gene lives in a sheltered area in comparison to where I garden 80 miles to west of him. He is close to the moderating effects of Lake Michigan and in a very urban setting with lots of concrete and structures around to modify his climate. Hope some of this helps.

Subject: [NAFEX] Apples on Mini-Dwarf Interstems
I was on Gene Yale's wonderful Backyard Orchard site a few days ago and was bitten by the bug to graft a couple of Mini-Dwarf apples for my yard. I'm intrigued specifically with Poland 22 (P.22) and am wondering if anyone on NAFEX has used this rootstock as an interstem. I'd like to use it on Antanovka rather than MM 111 but have no idea if a P.22 / Antanovka pairing would pose any problems.
If you've got any thoughts or feedback, I'd love to hear them. I've sent an e-mail to Gene as well. It would also be great to hear what kind of yield people have gotten with these Mini-Dwarfs and how many years it took for them to fruit. Thanks.
Springs almost here!
P.S. If you've not seen Gene's site, it's quite wonderful: http://www.midfex.org/yale/intro.html
