Figs cuttings are known to start molding or dry up, even if kept in the fridge... What I do for storing Fig cuttings, here in the northeast. I take the cuttings right before I wrap them. usually november or late october.. I dip the whole cutting in 10% chlorine 90% water solution... Then wrap them and place them in a plastic bag.. and keep them in the fridge.. usually around 40 deg. in late winter... I can start rooting them... and I get at least 90 % success rate.
I Imagine same solution would work for other scion wood. it keeps them from molding.

Subject: [NAFEX] storing scionwood

  Hallo Derry,

The following applies to working with dormant scions.
Apples, pears, quince, medlar break bud dormancy late. In March one can still cut scion from one tree and with whip-and-tongue graft (according Garner) graft on another. But if rind graft (crown graft) should be implemented, than the cut in March scions should be stored until April or May when the rind can part from the wood.
Drupes (almond, cherry, apricot...) break the dormancy in January. The use of the scions starts from February up to May, depending on the grafting method. The drupes scions should be cut not later than January and stored until the use.

I say again how should be dealt with dormant scions:
The cutting should be carried out in the time of bud dormancy (for drupes not later January and for the pome not later than March). Sometimes to avoid damage due to strong freezing upon the months January and February the cutting is carried in December.
The scions are wrapped in a moist (but not wet) newspaper sheets, and closed in a plastic bag. For very important samples may be used additional plastic bag. The bundle is kept frozen in refrigerator at temperature of 23 Grad F (-5 Grad C). Storing the frozen scions in this way assure the dormancy until Mai.

For this purpose a common refrigerator may be used, but for the tight temperature control the usual thermostat should be replaced with an electronic one. Temperature deviation in the interval from 25 to 20 Grad F does not matter.
