[NAFEX] Pecans

Some commercial nurserymen just soak the intact nuts in water for 5 days. One says he does not change the water but I would recommend it.

FWIW, I was told by a botanist one time that all that was necessary was to take a sharp knife and very gently pop the seam between the shell halves, just enough so that the kernel can take up water. I've done that with pecans and walnuts and it has worked every time, as long as the kernel was sound.

I have picked up pecans as late as Feb and put them in pots in the

may take some further stratification which is a minimum of 8 weeks in moist
cold, 12 weeks is better for nuts harvested in the fall and dried.

    Dear Nut Fanciers,

My lady just returned from N. Carolina with a gift-bag of pecans recently
picked up from beneath a tree. I have no information on how long they lay.
Any likelihood that these can be sprouted and grown, or would they have to
have been - I think the word is striated? If anyone thinks they might be
viable, any growing tips? I am on Long Island, Zone 6-7, so I thought we
might be at the very northern range where some might occasionally fruit.
    Thanks for any opinions.
    Sincerely, dylan
