We've not used margarine in 20 years, though my mom and other family members still do - I just can't convince 'em to change. Being veterinarians, we felt it necessary, from a moral standpoint, to support our clients, so we chose to use butter(and later, lard) - and I always felt that the whole 'butter is bad' thing was way off track, anyway - from a pure caloric standpoint, an ounce of butter and an ounce of margarine both contain essentially the same number of calories. Now that the trans-fats fiasco has been revealed, I too feel vindicated.
Sad to say, but I grew up on canned biscuits - those god-awful things in the explosive tubes. But, when I started making my own biscuits 15 years or so ago, I found that they were ever so much better, when made with lard and butter.
Bacon grease? Nectar of the Gods. LOL!
I can hardly keep it on hand, and with 4 teenage kids, when we cook bacon, it's usually 2 lbs at a whack.
