I have a degree in Chemistry and used to work for drug companies. Chokecherry bark, seeds and leaves contain a sugar compound called amygdalin which has CN attached to the molecule. When this compund is in water or is swallowed by an animal the CN part breaks off and combines with water to form HCN which is cyanide. Don't eat too much of the leaves, bark or pits. Apricot pits have the same poisonous chemical. Remember Laetrile. The bogus cancer cure.
