Bruce:

The source of my Yellow Newtown Pippin tree was Miller Nurseries in New
York State, so I think it is a fair assumption that the tree is from a
nursery somewhere in New York. The tree has cropped for two years
running now, and produces apples that are identical in appearance and
flavor to those grown in Albemarle County, Virginia, and sold as
Albemarle Pippin. Except that mine are somewhat larger and prettier
than the limited numbers of commercially grown fruit sold in the region,
due to a higher level of care. The apple has quite a distinctive shape
and flavor. I am sure there are several different strains of this old
apple out there, but you couldn't prove it by the apples I am growing.

You may have been thinking of Newport, RI, famous for its yachts, but,
who knows, there may be a Newport Pippin too.
