Unless they used steel plates over the hoof nails will go through anything,
even my nail proof firefighter boots.
My guy wears #4 size RB kegs, worked over to use #8 nails, toe clips, and
shop fitted. Borium is usual in the winter.
Tried snow pads one year-- the shoes wouldn't stay on with the added
thickness and snow got in by the heel under the pad anyway.
Farrier visits by calendar and on call. Usually have a set of take offs and
nails when on the road. Have found that nail cutters work well to separate
loose show from hoof without damage. If he looses a shoe on the trail we
just ride back at the walk back to minimize chipping.
