Dear Friends,
Greetings from Inter-Faith Food Shuttle
www.FoodShuttle.org<http://www.foodshuttle.org/>. We have great news
to share!
A warm spring with plenty of rain has brought much life to Inter-Faith Food
Shuttle's Farm at 4505 Tryon Rd, near Dover Farm & Tryon. Our Young Farmer
Training Program
www.foodshuttle.org/program/young-farmer-training-programis almost
finished with the 2011 Spring Session (one of three sessions each
year), and things have been wonderful in this pilot season of the program.
Three days per week, we host 10 teenage apprentices on our Tryon Rd farm.
These teenagers have been learning how to seed, transplant, plan and harvest
sustainable produce. Each week we also have conversations about food
justice, eating healthy, ending food insecurity, and the greater picture of
our food system. Now the apprentices are ready to start marketing the goods!
The more they can sell, the more they can earn.
THIS SATURDAY, May 21st, is *Opening Day* of our weekly roadside stand, *IFFS
Young Farmer Market* from 9am-1pm. Please come out and bring the family to
visit the farm, get some u-pick peas, buy delicious fresh produce, meet the
apprentices, and enjoy a fun farm Saturday!
The apprentices are also interested in selling wholesale to markets,
restaurants and catering companies, and this is the first week we'll be
harvesting for sales. Let us know if you're interested in receiving a weekly
list of wholesale prices, and if you'd like to place an order for pickup (or
delivery in Raleigh, with small additional fee). Feel free to pass this
email along to any businesses that might be interested in purchasing. This
is just the beginning, friends.
We plan to have weekly workshops/chef demos/events and u-pick harvest
options in addition to the fun volunteering opportunities we offer each
Saturday. If you are interested in hosting an event or workshop or a
demonstration on the farm during an upcoming Saturday, please let me know.
We'd love to have you!
Stay tuned for upcoming workshops and adventures with IFFS Young Farmer
Training program!
