Allan, don't know what type of soil you have.
I have found deep planting in clay soil is not a good idea; planting in a
trench works great.

Allan,
I would do some hardening off if you can.  I also bury tomatoes that get too

leggy very deep.  They root all along the stem that's buried.  That will 
give support to the plant.
