There's an eco-friendly restaurant nearby that swears by hanging a zip-type baggie half full of water over every entrance into the building.  He said it has cut his fly problems by 90%.

Subject: [Market-farming] Fly Prevention and my homemade fly strip


Prevention: 
Keep kitchen trash tightly closed. Sprinkle dry soap or borax into trash cans after they've been washed and allowed to dry; it acts as a repellent..

Oranges. Scratch the skin of an orange and leave it out; the citrus acts as a repellent.

Cloves. Hang clusters of cloves to repel flies.

Mint: Planted around the home repels flies.

Basil: pot of basil set on the windowsill or table helps to repel fleas. Keep basil well-watered from the bottom so that it produces a stronger scent. Dried ground leaves left in small bowls or hung in
muslin bags are also effective.


There are a few other suggestions to make your own but they require cooking or chemicals. This is the homemade fly paper I use.  

1/4 Cup Maple Syrup
1 Tbs Granulated Sugar
1 Tbs Brown Sugar

Mix everything together. Pour over strips of shopping bags or other paper and let soak overnight. Poke a hole in the strip and hang,
