Hi Lynn-
When I first started contacting grocery stores I was worried about things
like product and liability insurance, but to my surprise my local stores were
very welcoming and this insurance was not necessary. Actually they were
surprised I even asked about it. I am located in Western NYS and the biggest grocery
chain we have is Wegmans. I approached my local Wegmans and it was very
simple- the produce manager gave me some paperwork to fill out and they are always
looking for local farmers to work with if they need the particular produce.
They do have some regulations now with certain types of produce like broad leaf
greens and tomatoes- the farmers have to have a state certification showing
they had been inspected which is not cheap I guess. Pumpkins luckily were not
part of this. I think I have made good connections with three grocery stores
here that we will try to work with this fall. The managers were very helpful
and eager to work with local farmers. Hopefully your stores may begin to open
up to that more- did you try the smaller grocery stores?
Sincerely
Heather</HTML>
