Can you get them to taste samples?

Can you link some interesting heirloom varieties to the history of the 
area and/or to the history of the USA? "this variety was grown by . . . 
.  and was famous in x (area town) in the 1890's (or whenever)"?

Admittedly, on some people, nothing will work.
