Hi Judy
Our farm Stand is quite often self serve. We have a metal box with a slit
in the top for money. It is bolted to the wall and has a padlock on the top
so no one can get into it. We have tried many different things, and had to
resort to this because of people stealing money. This way, they may be able
to steal produce but not money. We have from time to time left a jar with
coin change, for people to get change for a one or so, but that is it. The
box we use happens to be an old milk delivery box which fits four half
gallons of milk. We were fortunate to come across it. We have a digital
scale with clearly printed directions for using and a calculator or two for
people to use. For the most part our customers love to help themselves and
will write a check if they don't have proper change. It is also very
important to have prices very clearly marked, because if not customers will
guess and it is usually on the low side of your price. We use 4x6 cards
with all prices directly in front of or beside the produce. Seems to work
much better than a price board. Kathy in Vermont

Subject: [Market-farming] Farm Stand Honor System
Would some of you share how you set up your on-farm stands using the honor
system? How do you let folks know about it without risking unsavory types
coming to dip in the till? Thanks, all ideas appreciated. Thanks for all
the sharing that's done by everyone on this site! Judy
