[Market-farming] Public land leases..unwritten code among farmers???

Of course they are upset.  You were willing to pay more than them and 
didn't give them a heads up so that they could either convince you not 
to bid or outbid you.  Don't let them get to you.  Farming is a business 
and leasing ground is part of it.
