I've experimented with mulching - and not , and found those varieties
kept tucked in have done better here. Also, since the crop is in the
ground so long, mulching does two things - keeps the alliums weed-free
and  keeps the good topsoil on the beds from either compacting or washing
away in heavy rainfall.
I grow on many raised berm-style beds.
