Ditto all the advice so far plus: I use burlap to wrap tree trunks through the winter over a chicken wire rodent barricade. Occasionally, I wrap the canopy against deer damage also when the trees are small enough for this to be practical. Staking is a good idea for the first season at least-conduit pipes work well for 1" ish caliper trees. Inspect your orchard now for tent worm egg masses. google for a photo. (I found seven yesterday)

There is a white plastic wrap available commercialy to protect the trees from heating in the winter. I believe it will also work to stop rodents.Maury sheetsWoodland ProduceSouthern New Jersey-----Original Message-----From: mcoldiron <mcoldiron at crcom.net>Reply-to: Market Farming <market-farming at lists.ibiblio.org>To: Market Farming <market-farming at lists.ibiblio.org>Subject: [Market-farming] Mulching Fruit TreesDate: Wed, 19 Nov 2008 10:42:21 -0600A few weeks ago, I put in a small peach orchard - 22 trees. To shave off a year or so from the time before the first harvest, I planted 5 gallon potted trees - yes, it did cost more, but felt it was worth it this time. Bare root will be used for further expansion. When planting, close attention was paid to where the ground level met the base of the trees, but I'm not sure about putting mulch around them. Should I pull the mulch back away from the base of the trees, or is it ok to leave it? The mulch I'm using is wood chips and is between 6 and 8 inches deep. Thanks for the help.
