> Bill - How are you doing buckwheat with cucumbers? -Allan

It's a research project headed up by someone else. I'm providing on-site
support for it. The objective is to determine the best time to kill the
buckwheat before planting the cukes, specifically at what stage of plant
development. Second, at what stage do you get the best suppression of weeds
by the buckwheat cover?

The buckwheat will be grown out and killed by mowing or tilling at two
different timings. Row widths will be 10'. There will be bare-ground
controls (comparisons) to measure weed control differences. Pickling
cucumbers will be sown into the plots 4-5 days after killing the buckwheat.

That's it in a nutshell. It'll be replicated (repeated geographically) 3
times. An off-campus grad student will be working half-time on it and I'll
work with her to address problems as they arise. A campus professor, Dr.
John Masiunas, designed the study. We'll probably have it done by the end of
August.
