Actually, We've had row cover "abrade" cucurbits down to a bare stem and
they never recovered. Depends on the winds, I think. We probably
wouldn't put row cover on cucurbits without hoops.

You can leave the cover on cucurbits without hoops. You may get a little
abrasion but you'll also accelerate crop growth. The covers raise the
heat through greenhouse effect. Your seeds will germinate faster for the
same reason. The covers need to be removed once flowering begins so bees
can pollinate the crops. Be sure to leave enough "give" in the cover so
that as the crops grow, the cover has some slack to give the crop.
