The better gasification units put out about 0.1g/hr per 10,000 btu, sometimes less, which is pretty clean and are about 90% efficient which is pretty good. You won't find a Wood Doctor even close to that though they might be working on one given the upcoming EPA regulations. The majority of manufacturers out there don't meet the regulations. I'm not picking on wood Doctor, it was just the one mentioned so I used it as an example. Gasification units burn in excess of 2000F and work partly by recirculating superheated air to boost combustion. The gas exiting the chimney is around 200-300 degrees. With these units you need to use well cured wood or the polution will go up and the efficiency will go down until the wood dries out in the boiler. You can also get alternative fuel backups, usually propane, if your schedule doesn't allow you to be around at times but of course that also costs money. The basic premise of these units is a three stage process the wood is turned into charcoal, releasing combustable gas which is blown down and burned in the next chamber, the charcoal burns in the first chamber as well, though slower, and also releases heat.
