Probably to late for this, but if you fly into Gatwick, go to the
Travelex counter in the south terminal. They hire phones that will work
in the UK (free incoming calls, decent outgoing calls). Pretty cheap to
rent.

I use Skype for long calls, but the mobile is good for emergencies.
