This is exactly the type of thing I'm talking about the ideal for public
radio.

I used to work for a radio software company, and the relaxation of laws
concerning how many stations a single company could own has resulted in a
huge reduction in the number of independent stations. As a result, digital
audio software is used to customize a single show and then broadcast it in
hundreds of markets. There no longer are opportunities for jobs as the old
fashioned "disk jocky", as you simply have a few program managers that pick
the music, and a voice that just reads words off of a screen, which is then
inserted into the mix at the right place using software. They can't mention
anything too specific because it would give away the fact the entire *&#*&$
station is being broadcast from 2000 miles away.

By comparison, the best public radio stations can find the local people who
are incredibly interesting and knowledgeable about a particular genre, and
give 'em a show. Not only do these types of people appeal to listeners of
that genre, but they typically draw in new converts as well when the public
radio format mixes different musical styles. Each musical genre by itself
might not be big enough to garner enough listeners on its own, but when
combined with an entire roster of exceptional music you get a vibrant and
popular public resource.

Personally I think WUNC missed a huge opportunity by not putting in any music
at all in their program. I can't believe that 24 hours a day of news is going
to get better ratings that 12 hours a day of news.
