Dear all

Well! I know that our new national Poet Laureate, W. S. Merwin, is reading at the same time at Duke. http://english.duke.edu/research/blackburn

He and I have spoken and I sent him my regrets - he is one of my favorite poets and a big influence. So, I'll understand if you forego my reading for his. But...if you weren't able to get tickets, and want a reading that won't be as crowded, and I hope will be as inspired and inspiring, please join me at the NC Botanical Garden<http://bignews.biz/?id=927713&keys=POETRY-READING-GARDEN-WOODS>. I'll be reading from the whole body of my work - including poems from my new book, Gospel Earth<http://skysillpress.blogspot.com/2010/06/now-available.html>. As well as some of my favorite poems and songs from other poets - all botanical/horticultural poems.

Jeffery Beam's poems are rooted in the garden, woods, fields, mountains, and world waters. He will be reading a selection of poems from many of his published books, including The Fountain<http://www.unc.edu/~jeffbeam/reviews_fountain.html>, Visions of Dame Kind<http://www.unc.edu/~jeffbeam/reviews_visions.html>, What We Have Lost: New & Selected Poems<http://www.unc.edu/~jeffbeam/reviews_lost.html>, An Elizabethan Bestiary: Retold<http://www.unc.edu/~jeffbeam/reviews_bestiary.html>, and the recently released Gospel Earth<http://myku-brian.blogspot.com/2010/08/gospel-earth-by-jeffrey-beam-review.html>. In addition, he'll be sharing a few of his favorite botanical and horticultural related poems by other poets.

Natural historian Janet Lembke says of Beam's work: "Jeffery Beam, poet and gardener, understands that human beings are part of the natural world, not observers standing apart from it or lords insisting on remaking it. He makes our connectedness wonderfully clear with poems focused primarily on plants, from dandelions to wildflowers to pumpkins and cabbages and on to lilacs and tulip trees. He sees humankind as an intrinsic part of creation sharing equally with moth, acanthus leaf, black gum, and nuthatch. Gentle poems, tender poems, poems unafraid of death and rejoicing at resurrection. He lets us go forth into gardens, fields, and woods as part of the green world. Down with dominion! Here's to courting earth's acceptance."

North Carolinian Jeffery Beam is the author of over 20 works of poetry, musical collaboration, and criticism. Since 1974, he has given close to 900 poetry readings, lectures, and panel discussions throughout North Carolina and the East Coast, and in Canada and Italy. Beam is a botanical librarian at UNC-Chapel Hill and poetry editor of Oyster Boy Review<http://www.oysterboyreview.org/issue/19/essays/BeamJ-reviews.html>.
