[Homestead] Five Days and Counting

Yes, I agree,,,,,,,,,,,, I think I did not push mulch/soil up fast enough on the first sections of potato plants.  These plants that don't look well never really grew from the get go, and never got over 8" tall above the ground and I don't even remember them flowering.  Maybe the little pototo piece was too small ??? to begin with????

I've got another section planted and I can hardly keep up with that one.

Good to know that wilting etc is more normal.

OH, another thing is that the virgin sand here isn't exactly real fertile.......... This patch didn't have much manure in it, which might also be affecting things.  The other patch which is heavier in manure is the one that is growing much faster.

I figure it will take a few years to get this beach sand to be more suitable to growing better.

:-)  Live and learn :-)  Glad I'm doing many experiments.  The tallest potatoes are in partial shade. and I probably should have put a 3rd and 4th tire on, but didn't.

I have time to plant again in August and intend to get more tires and plant in different areas.

Oh !!! I have about 40 baby tomatoes that came out yesterday and today.... I'm loaded with bees, all kinds of breeds of bees, for some reason.  Big black ones, honey bees, little bright green bees, funky looking bees.... they're all over the flowers and trees around the garden and I'm finding them around the veggie flowers all the time.  :-)

Sounds good to me!

I think so.  IMO, it all sounds pretty much like what normally happens.
As to your small plant, how deep would you say the stem is covered?

For my potatoes that are planted in the ground, if I stretched them out
and pulled them up out of the ground/mulch, I'd say they would be 3-5
feet long, because I just let the vine fall over in the line and then
mulched again.  My tire stacks are 4 tires tall, so I know they are 3-4
feet tall as well.

Maybe your small potato plant just did not get covered well or often
enough to grow long?  I have potatoes in almost every bed, it seems.
Some of my vines are dying, too.  In another week or two, I'll start
digging.  I really want some potato salad!
