JAMES WROTE <<<<,hill the dirt around them until the hill stands 10" high or bigger.
When the potato blooms, it's useless to hill it any farther>>>>
I did the trenches, and covered as you suggested - and most of those potatos are peeking their nose out now with beautiful green leaves.
10" high??? Around what, each potato plant?
And as far as potato bloom, is that flower?
We had a couple of cold nights here under 32 after some of the first potatos I planted in tires came up. The ones that had straw over them, nothing happened. One had gotten taller and some of the leaves turned black - BUT - a week or so later you'd never know anything happened.
(And the potatoes I ordered on-line last fall.......... which were promised weeks ago,,,,,,,,,, still haven't been shipped.
<<< this is going to be a dicey year>>>> expand on those thoughts, please :-)

People can foresee the future only when it coincides with their own wishes, and the most grossly obvious facts can be ignored when they are unwelcome. Political language... is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.” ~ George Orwell
