Akka, I clicked on the EMP site.  It is a long article and I have to leave for a short business meeting in a minute.  I will read when I return, but I can tell by the first few paragraphs, it will probably be better for me, to not add this to my "worry list", else may have to call doc for benzo's <g>.
I'm replying now so that you will know that your messages are getting out ....bobford

http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/08/lights_out_emp_warfare.html

One of my biggest fears has always been an EMP that takes out the country's electronics.  We are so dependent on them that I wonder how we  would be without them.  There would be no communication, so people at home would have no idea of what happened.  The government, which has some hardened assets, would quickly be determining who to attack and wouldn't be worrying about Americans.  We would be onl our own.

I think about at what point, when I lose power and run out of gas for the generators, do I go to Plan B and then plan C.  Do I even go to Plan B with no information, or do I stick it out with Plan A.  In a Mad Max kind of world, what do you do?  An EMP detonation would turn millions of Americans against each other in a competition for
food, water, and probably drugs/meds.

I think, how would I get out of this area if I had no vehicle?  I do have a boat, so I could travel on the river.  Is there a better way?  maybe the railroad?  Is it possible to built a small, human powered railcar/handcar? Sure, look at these things:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handcar
Do I have maps for the rivers and rails?  Maps would be very important to avoid certain locations and obstacles.  I know the AT goes to Maine, perhaps that is a possibility as well?  What would I do if there were no information upon which to make a decision....things just stopped..because if it was a nationwide EMP, things would be just as dead in Maine as in Georgia..  Maybe it would only affect the East coast and the Western US would be ok.  Perhaps traveling to the sea is a better option?  Try to hop a boat-you know they will be there, either for refugees, POWs,
slavery, etc.  Maybe I could go west via the rails?

But, assuming I stay put and stick it out here on the homestead, what can I do now to prepare for a post EMP world?  Things I think of right off the bat are to acquire and use 'appliances' that do not have computer chips or are electric, like an old fashioned meat grinder or a french press coffee maker or hand tools.  Mostly, I have that stuff.  Homesteaders generally do take the longer more labor intensive route.
Second, since I collect rainwater, I think I am pretty well set.  I can boil it on the woodstove. I live in an area where there are many artesian wells, so while I may have to haul water, it is possible.  I can hunt, fish, and trap.  I have various food supplies stored.  I suppose I should stock up on ammo and learn reloading.
Is it possible to protect something besides creating a faraday cage, that is, can you bury a car thirty feet deep
in a hill, disconnect everything, and post EMP, assemble it and have it work?  I'm not a radio person, so bear with me on this question...will an EMP knock out ham/shortwave radio systems?  Will my Baygen still receive shortwave?
The biggest fear is the lack of knowledge....being in the dark afterwards.  It is hard to make decisions when you don't have sufficient knowledge.  Everything becomes gut instinct and a crap shoot.
You thoughts on this scenario(s)?
