I heard the same report this morning. I think it was more filler than
informative. I have been involved with antique tractor since before they
were considered antique. In the late eighties Oscar's Dreamland was sold.
This was an extensive collection of large and very rare tractors, most
complete and in semi running condition. Of those many went to foreign
investors. They were interested in the rare and unusual and bid up many
prices.
Smaller auctions are held every year in Vista and in Tulare California.
Smaller more common tractors still go for decent prices and are useable
tractors. I have seen many usable tractors go for well under $3000, a very
early D4 with blade went for $2500 this last spring and it started and ran
well. On the other hand a restored mid 20s Holt sixty with a late 20s Cat
engine sold for over $20,000.
I found a restored 1946 Farmall A with a new Woods belly finish mower for
#3000 recently and may buy it next spring.
Antique tractors may be a good investment but not like the piece showed. I
bought a spritz can painted 1965 Ford 3000 with some minor problems for a
very good price. I could sell it for at least $1000 more than I paid but it
was bought as a tool.
