Very true.  It's group dynamics, and it says something about group members.
Just look at this group...  no matter how liberal some are on the surface, we are just conservative enough to want a more 'old fashioned' existence.  That core belief binds us, makes us listen to each other.
Those that are disgusted by our conversations or those that are above this or don't understand our philosophy, they punched out long ago.  The ones who have stayed are the ones who are getting something that their soul craves.  I think churchgoing is much the same dynamic, and for someone to become a member of a church for 20 years and claim that the bigoted pastor is 'like family'...well...to me, that is just as scary as Palin saying that the troops are tasked by God.
