I have pictures, but the butternut hickory looks almost identical to the
butternut, and I'm pretty sure both grow here.
We have pignut, mockernut, bitternut, butternut, shagbark(the best
firewood), shellbark, sand, and water hickories in this area. I have
all but shellbark, sand, and water hickories on this property. Of
course, the butternut hickory is questionably a butternut.
The only thing I can see if the number of leaflets on the leaf.
Butternut has 7-14 leaflets.
Butternut Hickory has 7-11 leaflets.
So I guess if I find 13 leaflets, it'd be a butternut.
I can't wait until tomorrow..
