[Homestead] Heinlein, was SE PA going

Bev; you described my life. I belong to a lot of groups, but they are the
kind where you keep in touch by newsletters and email. The one local (state)
group has a great convention, but I haven't been able to go for years (kids
were too young to leave alone overnight).
Every few months I think that I need to get out and meet people. I join the
garden club, or photography club, go to a couple meetings, and am bored
silly. Almost everyone I meet is married and has to rush home to the hubby
and kids. Any activities with them involves dragging the kids and their
husband along. I joined a county planning group; it was interesting, but
very professional and I only saw the people during the meetings. I tried
dating a couple times, and that was even more disappointing. My life is
boring, but I don't mind, either. I don't often get lonely, and have plenty
to keep me busy.
There are a couple of women around the county who are kindred spirits with
me, but they are always so busy that we can't get together very often. My
neighbors are either rich retirees or work 60-hour weeks in an office and
are never home; they hire people to do their yardwork, so they aren't the
types I could be a 'homestead community' with. It wasn't like that when I
moved here.

Like Lynn though, Bob, I know of no such life. I have no group
associations outside of this list, with the exception of NWGAA, and I
consider that more of Ron's group than mine, even though I have met some
really nice people there. A few months ago, when 3 of my neighbors and
I got together and made those leaf birdbaths, I was hopeful that it
would be the start of something, but it hasn't been. I haven't seen S
since the day we made them, and while I do see C, we haven't done
anything together, only discussed the latest dog to be abandoned(a pit
bull this time-lovely) and Ava, my best friend, is so busy that I see
her once a week at best anymore. I take that back..one day, Ava and C
were out 'shopping' and came by...they were here long enough for me to
corral them into picking up a few walnuts...lol..they were gone 15
minutes later. So I can't say we haven't done anything together.
I really don't have much of a life...but that's okay by me. Other
people think it is foreign or odd that there's no Christmas parties or
holiday celebrations to go to or that there is no big production at the
holidays. We don't go to midnight mass or go caroling or anything like
that. We just live, work, feed the chickens, watch some TV, sit around
and wait for the kid to call, read, etc. BORING, by the standards of
modern life, but just fine by me. That should explain why I feel so
much closer to people here than I really should, and why list problems
become my personal problems. I've seen Gene since I have seen my
brother and sister. <sigh> And you guys are like my family...who else
will understand the time I am spending ripping up and sewing sheets to
make a braided rug, or how I struggled to hang a bunch of walnuts in the
barn, or why my hands are black or how much pleasure I just got out of
digging 3 pounds of potatoes from a forgotten spot or how freaking cold
I am right now, but too lazy to build a fire until I have to???? LOL
On a more chipper note, I did plant some grass seed
today..woohoo...should have some nice fescue and rye come up over the
line from the well to the house. Also, I planted some ornamental
alliums, you know, the globe type, big purple balls-I treated myself
last time I was in Home Deposit..I can't wait until they bloom!!! I
also fed and held the baby chickens, who are now almost 6 weeks old and
ready to go into the old coop with a light. I planted more black
walnuts in a barrel hoping to get some to germinate for transplanting..
The eggs/embryos in the incubator are 14 days old...one more week..
Carry on...
