I forgot to add this book to my previous post on blacksmithing. "Make Your
Own Woodworking Tools: Metalwork Techniques to Create, Customize, and
Sharpen in the Home Workshop" is a decent introductory book on making useful
things using blacksmithing techniques. The book shows how to make the
necessary tools, an anvil, and both gas and charcoal forges. I like his
version of a small gas forge using plumbers gas bottles and some fire brick.
It is just the right size for making woodworking tools.
He shows how common shop tools are used in the tool making process,
discusses types of steels, and shows several examples of woodworking tools
from concrete nails, broken saw blades, and tool steel from the steel yard.
He also shows how to make handles for the tools. All in all it is a good
book for someone just starting out in tool making and does not want to spend
a lot of money.
