[Homestead] Book review strategy

I am trying to figure out how to become a good enough book reviewer
that I can persuade publishers to send me advance copies in those
subjects of my interest. When I get lucky and publish the first review
of a book on Amazon I get lots of attention and it helps with my
standing, credibility and exposure. But when I do not find out about a
book until others have already posted reviews, I wonder if my time is
wasted.

So I am trying to figure how to get better positioning on Amazon even
though I am late. You can help. Go to my just-posted review of Barbara
Kingsolver's book: Animal, Vegetable, Miracle on Amazon.com. My review
is on page 17 of the 22 pages of reviews. This should get you there:

http://www.amazon.com/review/product/0060852550/ref=cm_cr_pr_link_17?%5Fencoding=UTF8&pageNumber=17

At least they put me at the top of the five pages of reviews written
earlier. At the end of my review, if your conscience allows, please
check the box that says it was useful. I hope to get many people to do
this and then see what happens to the position, if anything.

What is your take on all this?
